چکیده

McGraw et al. (2004) have recently presented evidence that barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) feathers from the forehead and throat do not contain carotenoids, and melanins are the determinants of their chestnut coloration. This contradicts evidence I presented in a book entitled The colour of flight: carotenoids in bird plumage (Stradi, 1995, 1998), where a tridimensional high-performance liquid chromatogram of carotenoids extracted from these feathers is presented and feathers are described as containing carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, and 3-hydroxy-echinenone). After the publication of the paper by McGraw et al. (2004), I have analyzed a pool of throat feathers collected from 20 adult barn swallows from a population breeding in Italy. This analysis confirmed the findings of McGraw et al. (2004). In addition, optical stripping by Raman spectroscopy confirmed the absence of carotenoids from barn swallow throat feathers. Thus, the information contained in my book (Stradi, 1995, 1998) about the composition of pigments in barn swallow feathers is not correct. The book resulted from an extensive analysis of pigment composition of feathers from hundreds of specimens belonging to more than 80 different species carried out for 2 years. The inconsistency of the information provided for the barn swallow may have arisen because of insufficient cleaning of the carotenoid extraction system.

How feather colour reflects its melanin content

1. Melanin coloration is the most common type of colour in animals. Many species use melanin-based black, brown, grey or earth-toned colours as intraspecific signals of quality. 2. Melanin comes in two main forms in vertebrates – eumelanin and phaeomelanin – and these are said to create different colours, with eumelanin giving a darker black, brown or grey appearance and phaeomelanin a lighter ...

Red-winged blackbirds Agelaius phoeniceus use carotenoid and melanin pigments to color their epaulets

Over the past three decades, the red-winged blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus has served as a model species for studies of sexual selection and the evolution of ornamental traits. Particular attention has been paid to the role of the colorful red-and-yellow epaulets that are striking in males but reduced in females and juveniles. It has been assumed that carotenoid pigments bestow the brilliant red...

The function of long tails in female barn swallows {Hirundo rustica): an experimental study

The outermost tail feathers in male barn swallows {Hirundo rustica) are the target of a strong directional female mate preference. The" tait ornament is also expressed in females, since females have considerably longer tails than juveniles, either due to (1) a strong genetic correlation between the characters in the two sexes, or (2) direct sexual selection on females. To discriminate between t...

Experimental tail shortening in Barn Swallows ( Hirundo rustica ) affects haematocrit

1. Recent studies in Scotland suggest that the outermost tail feathers of Barn Swallows ( Hirundo rustica Linnaeus) may be around 10–12 mm longer than the aerodynamic optimum, with sexual selection for long tails accounting for this extra length. 2. To test this hypothesis, we shortened the outermost tail feathers in male and female Barn Swallows in southern Spain by cutting 1, 11 or 21 mm from...
